Sherman Floors After 2023
On March 31, 2023, a high-end EF-2 tornado hit Sherman during a large tornado outbreak. If your garage was repaired or rebuilt afterward, the new concrete changes what epoxy flooring needs. Sherman was already a growing village before the storm. It had 519 residents in 1970, 1,501 in 1980 and 4,673 in 2020. So the garages we see here are a mix of fresh rebuilds, 1990s and 2000s subdivision slabs, and a smaller number of older floors.
Coating a rebuilt garage
A garage that was rebuilt or had its slab replaced needs a little patience. New concrete gives off water for weeks after it is poured. A coating put down too soon traps that moisture, and the floor can blister or lose its bond. We take moisture readings before we schedule, and we tell you if the slab needs more time. When it is ready, we diamond grind it like any other floor. New slabs are smooth and hard, and grinding is what lets the coating grip.
If only part of a slab was replaced, we look closely at the seam between old and new concrete. The two halves may sit at slightly different heights or move differently. We grind the edge flush and fill the joint so the finished floor reads as one surface. A rebuilt garage is also a good time to coat, because the space is often still empty.
Newer subdivision garages
Sherman's housing grew from 989 units in 2000 to 1,779 in 2020. Most of those garages are attached, two or three cars wide, and in good structural shape. The work there is mostly about the finish. Epoxy Flake Floors are the most common choice. A Polyaspartic Floor Coating topcoat keeps the color steady near a door that stays open on summer afternoons.
Golf carts, lawn equipment and third bays
The Rail Golf Course, an 18-hole course that hosted the LPGA State Farm Classic from 1976 to 2006, sits in Sherman. If a golf cart, mower or utility vehicle shares your garage, the floor sees battery acid drips, fuel, grass clippings and narrow tires that grind grit into the surface. A thicker flake system with a chemical-resistant topcoat handles that better than a thin coat. We pay extra attention to the spot where a cart charges.
Businesses at Route 66 Crossing
Route 66 Crossing is the retail and commercial district on Sherman's north side, and new commercial lots are listed by the village. Shops, offices and service businesses there often have concrete in back rooms, storage areas or service bays. Commercial & Shop Floor Epoxy gives those spaces a sealed surface that is easy to mop and stands up to carts and hand trucks. We schedule commercial work after hours or in sections when needed.
What Sherman owners usually choose
- Rebuilt or replaced slab: moisture test, grind, then a flake system once the concrete is ready
- 2000s attached garage: Epoxy Flake Floors with a polyaspartic topcoat
- Golf cart or mower bay: heavier build with a chemical-resistant top layer
- Older slab with storm cracks: Concrete Crack & Floor Repair before coating
- Basement: Basement Floor Epoxy after moisture readings
- Back room or service bay: Commercial & Shop Floor Epoxy
Cracks after a storm
High winds and falling debris can crack a garage slab, and heavy equipment used in cleanup can add more. Most of these cracks are cosmetic, and we fill them during prep. If a crack is wide, uneven from side to side, or still growing, we recommend having it looked at before coating. If you are working through an insurance claim, we can give you a written scope that lists floor work by itself.

Sherman Questions
Our garage slab was replaced after the tornado. How long should we wait to coat it?
It depends on the concrete, the weather and how the garage was closed up. Rather than guess, we take moisture readings. When the slab tests dry enough for the system we plan to use, we schedule the work.
Do I need a permit to coat my garage floor in Sherman?
A floor coating is interior surface work, and it does not change the structure. If you are also rebuilding walls, doors or the slab, check with the Village of Sherman about permits for that part of the job.
Can a coated floor handle a golf cart charging in the garage?
Yes, with the right topcoat. We recommend a chemical-resistant top layer and a thicker build where the cart parks. Wipe up any battery fluid soon after it drips.
