Surfaces That Last, Auburn Style
Auburn knows what a durable surface looks like. Just north of town on Illinois Route 4, a brick-paved section of the original Route 66 alignment is still in place, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 for its engineering. Our epoxy flooring in Auburn is built with the same idea in mind: do the groundwork right and the surface on top lasts. For a garage or basement, that groundwork is grinding, repair and a moisture check before any resin goes down.
A town with layers of history
Auburn was platted in 1836 a mile north of where it stands today. When the Alton and Sangamon Railroad bypassed it, the town moved south in 1853 and was incorporated under the Auburn name in 1865. Coal mining drove the local economy from the 1880s to 1924. A fire in 1910 destroyed much of the town square. The result is a town with homes from many different decades, and garage floors from just as many eras.
Older homes near the square
Houses closer to the center of town often have detached garages, outbuildings or basements poured long before modern slab practices. On those floors we often find:
- Thin or uneven concrete that has been patched by hand over the years
- Several layers of paint, each one peeling a little differently
- Wide cracks and broken edges along the old door opening
- Basement floors that feel cool and damp in July
These slabs usually need more prep than a newer garage. We grind down to clean concrete, rebuild broken edges with repair mortar and level low spots so the coating has an even surface to bond to.
Newer garages around town
Auburn's population grew from 288 in 1880 to 4,771 in 2010, and much of that growth brought attached two-car garages. These slabs are usually in better shape, so the decision is mostly about finish and how fast you need the garage back. A flake broadcast floor is the most practical everyday option. A polyaspartic system gets you parking again sooner. Either one keeps winter brine from soaking into the slab.
Coal history and cracks
With mining in the area for more than 40 years, it is fair to ask whether a crack is from old workings below. Most garage cracks we see in Auburn are ordinary shrinkage and settling cracks, and filling them is part of prep. A crack that appears suddenly, keeps widening or comes with sticking doors deserves a closer look before you coat. We point those out at the estimate and suggest who to call.
Shops and storage buildings
Auburn sits among farm fields, and plenty of properties around town have a pole barn or workshop with a concrete floor. Our commercial and shop floor epoxy is a thicker system for those spaces, made to handle equipment, fuel and fertilizer spills, and heavy rolling loads.

Auburn History That Shows Up in Its Floors
- Route 66 brick road. A brick-paved section of the original Route 66 alignment survives just north of Auburn along IL 4 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 6, 1998.
- A town that moved. Auburn was platted in 1836, moved a mile south in 1853 after the railroad bypassed it, and was incorporated under the Auburn name in 1865.
- Coal and a fire. Coal mining dominated the local economy from the 1880s until 1924, and a 1910 fire destroyed much of the town square.
- Homes today. The 2020 census counted 4,574 residents and 1,914 housing units, with 36.9% of households including children under 18.

Auburn Questions
My garage near downtown Auburn has old paint on it. Do you have to remove it all?
Yes. Paint that is already peeling will take a new coating with it. We grind the whole floor down to bare, sound concrete, edges included, and then repair whatever we uncover before the base coat goes on.
Can you coat a basement in an older Auburn home?
Usually. We take moisture readings first, because older basement slabs often have no vapor barrier underneath. Depending on the numbers, we use a moisture-tolerant primer or tell you to wait and deal with the water source first.
Do you coat pole barn or workshop floors outside town?
Yes. Shop floors get a thicker, chemical-resistant system. We look at the slab's condition, the equipment you run on it and what gets spilled on it before recommending a build.
