Older Concrete in a College Town
Jacksonville is one of the oldest towns we serve, and that shapes how we approach epoxy flooring in Jacksonville. The city was founded in 1825 on a 160-acre tract in the middle of Morgan County. Illinois College followed in 1829, and the town took on the nickname "Athens of the West." Nearly two centuries of building means many basements and garages here sit on old, worn concrete. Those floors can look great again with the right prep.
Old-house basements
Older Jacksonville homes often have basements with rough, patched or painted floors. Some were poured in sections over many years. Before coating one, we: 1. Test moisture in several spots, since older basements rarely have a vapor barrier. 2. Grind off old paint, sealers and loose patches. 3. Fill cracks and level low spots around drains. 4. Choose a primer to match the readings, then apply the epoxy system.
A light solid color brightens a dark basement. A flake system hides the uneven texture old concrete sometimes has after grinding.
Detached garages
Many houses near the older core of town have detached garages behind them. These slabs are often thinner, sloped and cracked from years of freeze and thaw. We repair and level them first. A flake broadcast floor with a clear topcoat then seals them against winter salt.
Less mine risk than our other counties
Morgan County has far less mined ground than the coal counties east and south of here. The Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund puts just 282 of the county's 15,004 housing units in mine-related zones, and does not list Morgan as a mandatory county. So most cracks we see in Jacksonville come from shrinkage, age and settling. That is good news, because those are the cracks a repair and coating handle well.
A manufacturing town needs working floors
Jacksonville has long built things. W.E. Sullivan introduced his first portable "Big Eli" Wheel on the town square on May 23, 1900, and Eli Bridge Company still makes Ferris wheels and rides here. The city has also been home to large plants, including a record pressing plant that employed more than 1,000 people at its peak. Shops, fabrication spaces and warehouses need floors that resist oil, solvents and rolling loads. Our commercial and shop epoxy systems are built thicker for that kind of use.
Rental homes near campus
Illinois College and the state schools keep a steady population of students and staff, and some of them rent. Landlords who own older houses near campus often ask us for a basement or garage coating that survives frequent move-ins and move-outs. A solid-color epoxy mops clean, does not hold odors and makes a unit show better. We schedule those jobs between leases so the floor has cured before the next tenant arrives.
Getting to you
Jacksonville is about 32 miles west of Springfield, with Interstate 72 passing south of the city. We schedule Jacksonville jobs on consecutive days so coats go down on time and cure on schedule.

Jacksonville Questions
Can you coat a very old basement floor in Jacksonville?
Often, yes. We test moisture first, since old basements rarely have a vapor barrier. If the readings allow it, we grind, repair and coat with a primer chosen for that slab. If moisture is too high, we tell you before you spend anything.
Is a crack in my Jacksonville garage likely from mining?
It is less likely here than in Sangamon, Christian or Macoupin counties, because Morgan County has very little ground in mine-related zones. Most cracks we see in Jacksonville come from age, shrinkage and freeze-thaw, and we repair them during prep.
Do you coat floors for manufacturers and shops?
Yes. We install thicker, chemical-resistant systems for shops, fabrication areas and storage. We visit first to see the traffic, chemicals and equipment the floor needs to handle.
