A Growing Village With Room for Big Garages
New Berlin has been adding people while many small towns lose them, and newer homes mean newer garages. That is where most of our epoxy flooring work in New Berlin starts. German immigrants founded the village in 1865, and the population fell for much of the 1900s before turning around after 1970. The 2020 census counted 1,381 residents, up 2.6% from 2010, and a median age of 35.9.
Young households, busy floors
About 40.2% of New Berlin households have children under 18, and 28.2% of residents are under 18. That means garages packed with bikes, strollers, sports gear and a second set of everything. When a garage is used that hard, the floor matters. Here is what we see families choose most:
- Epoxy flake floors, because they hide dirt, add grip and are easy to hose off
- Polyaspartic floor coating for a faster return to parking
- Basement floor epoxy for playrooms and storage once the slab passes a moisture test
Newer slabs still need grinding
A garage poured in the last 20 or 30 years usually has fewer cracks than an older one, but it has its own catch. New slabs are often troweled very smooth, and some have a cure-and-seal product on top. A coating will not grip either one. We diamond-grind every slab to open the surface, then fill any shrinkage cracks before the base coat. That step is what keeps a coating from peeling after its first winter.
Farm shops on the edge of town
The census counts New Berlin as entirely rural, and the village is surrounded by farmland. The Sangamon County Fairgrounds are here too, home of the county fair that opens the Wednesday before Father's Day weekend each June. Around town, machine sheds and farm shops carry tractors, grain trucks, oil changes and chemical spills. For those buildings, our commercial and shop floor epoxy is a thicker build with a chemical-resistant topcoat. We degrease and grind the slab first so the system bonds to clean concrete.
Older buildings on the main street
Old Illinois Route 54 is New Berlin's main street. A few of the village's original buildings still stand along it, though most have been replaced. Older storefronts and back rooms often have worn, patched concrete. Concrete crack and floor repair brings those slabs back to an even surface before a commercial coating goes down.

- Younger households. In 2020 the median age was 35.9, 40.2% of the 540 households had children under 18, and 100% of residents were counted as rural.
- County fair town. The Sangamon County Fairgrounds in New Berlin host the annual county fair, which starts on the Wednesday before Father's Day weekend in June.

New Berlin Questions
My New Berlin home is fairly new. Does the garage floor still need prep?
Yes. Newer slabs are often troweled smooth or treated with a cure-and-seal product, and coatings will not bond well to either. We grind every floor so the coating has a rough, clean surface to grab.
Can you coat a farm shop where we change oil and store chemicals?
Yes. We recommend a thicker shop system with a chemical-resistant topcoat for that kind of use. We degrease and grind out stained areas first, and we will tell you if any part of the slab needs repair before coating.
Can you do my garage and shop at different times?
Yes. Our quotes list each floor separately, so you can schedule one now and the other later without having to re-measure.
